An electrofishing assessment or fish population evaluation is the process of sampling a fish population by using boat mounted electrofishing gear. Electrofishing is a tool used by fisheries managers to evaluate ponds and lakes by stunning the fish that are close to the boat with pulsed electricity to allow us to capture them by net and place them into a livewell. During an assessment, we collect a representative sample of fish from the pond or lake by sampling multiple habitats to evaluate which fish species are present, species relative abundance, distribution of sizes, fish condition, and overall health. Length and weight data are recorded from collected fish and they are then released back into the water. When harvest is necessary, those fish can be removed at that time. We also make observations such as aquatic vegetation abundance and identification, water color and visibility, fish habitat availability, site characteristics, and drain system condition, among others. A water sample is collected for total alkalinity, total hardness, and pH measurements. Additional water quality testing can be done where needed. We offer assessments with comprehensive reports that go into detail on the fish population, water quality, fish habitat, overall site characteristics, and goals. The recommendations that are included are geared toward achieving your goals. Where a full, detailed report is not needed, we offer a brief summary which covers similar information in shorter format. We also offer harvest sessions to help remove small bass when needed.
